Commercial Grade Pyrotechnics to Blame for Memorial Drive Explosion
Package that exploded had been at explosion site for two months before April 16 incident.

The explosion at the Veteran's Thrift Shop at 1599 Memorial Drive Tuesday was caused by static electricity and commercial pyrotechnics, an Atlanta Police Department spokesman said.
The explosion β which came only a day after the terrorist bombings in Boston β drew a host of local, state and federal investigators who quickly determined that it wasn't a bomb.
"Further investigation in consultation with the ATF [Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms] has led us to determine that the incident on Memorial Drive on Tuesday afternoon involved commercial-grade pyrotechnics that probably ignited due to static electricity," APD spokesman Carlos Campos said in a statement.
