Jason Carter Running for Governor: 'I'm In. Let's Do This Together.'

by Jay Scott

State Sen. Jason Carter, the Democrat whose District 42 includes Candler Park, East Lake, Kirkwood and Edgewood, has entered the 2014 race for governor.

Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, first revealed his plans in an interview Wednesday with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He formally announced today and sent out a tweet: "I'm in. Let's do this together."

Carter will attempt to unseat Gov. Nathan Deal, the Republican incumbent who defeated Roy Barnes in 2010. Deal already faces primary opposition within his party from state Schools Superintendent John Barge and Dalton Mayor David Pennington.

In a campaign e-mail sent out to voters Thursday, Carter, 38, pledged to continue what he said has been his causes as a state senator.

"In my years in the state senate, I have fought to grow the middle class and help small businesses; to support public schools and make higher education affordable; and to reform our ethics laws," the campaign e-mail reads. "It is what I will continue to do as your Governor."

Carter won a special election in May 2010 for the District 42 seat. He replaced former Sen. David Adelman, who was appointed ambassador to Singapore.

Carter won the general election later that year to secure a two-year term.

District 42 includes many neighborhoods from Buford Highway to Dekalb Avenue including North Druid Hills, Morningside, Druid Hills, Decatur and Avondale Estates.
