Canton Road Gas Station Approved by Planners

The county planning commission unanimously approved the proposal to build a RaceTrac at Canton and Shallowford roads.

The Cobb County Planning Commission approved plans to build a new RaceTrac gas station and convenience store at the corner of Canton and Shallowford roads during their Tuesday meeting, according to a report.

The RaceTrac as proposed will include a 5,500 sq. ft. convenience station and will be open 24/7, zoning documents state. The station will employ approximately 20 to 25 people, writes the Marietta Daily Journal.

The gas station will require a variance to exceed the maximum footage allowed for convenience stores, which is currently set at 3,000 sq. ft. The MDJ reports that planning commission recommended approval of this request, but also recommended deliveries only be allowed between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The commission also stipulated that the developers must enter into an agreement to donate right-of-ways on the east side of Canton Road, the north side of Shallowford Road, and the South Side of Pine Hill Road, according to documents. There will also be deceleration lanes leading to the station on Canton and Shallowford roads.

Residents of nearby neighborhoods spoke out against the plan, the MDJ says, citing concerns about increased traffic and safety.
