EAST COBB, GA — Soaring oil prices mean more pain at the pump for East Cobb residents, with the average gas price already well above the $4.29 mark across the state, according to GasBuddy.

Gas prices in the Atlanta area are above the statewide average, priced at $4.33 per gallon in the metro on Thursday. In Cobb County, the average gas price was $4.30 per gallon and rising.

The increases are especially sharp considering that the average gas price in Georgia was just $2.64 a year ago, according to AAA. The average price in the Atlanta metro area this time last year was $2.62.

But you may be able to still save a little bit if you know where to look in East Cobb.

According to GasBuddy, the cheapest gas in East Cobb is selling for $4.05 per gallon at Coastal, 2011 Lower Roswell Road as of Thursday afternoon. Here are some other places you can save in and around East Cobb:

As gasoline prices in Georgia hit their highest mark in nearly 14 years, Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted Tuesday that his office is working with the general assembly to temporarily suspend the state's gas tax.

The announcement comes after President Joe Biden said Tuesday morning he was placing a ban on the import of Russian oil in the United States after Russia's violent invasion of Ukraine.

Kemp said he wants to "lessen the significant impact" higher gas prices are having on families. Prices are up 67 cents from last week's average.

Georgia collects a state excise tax of 28.7 cents per gallon on gasoline sales, according to a January 2022 report from American Petroleum Institute. Georgians pay 55.95 cents per gallon accounting for all state and federal taxes and fees.

The increases mark the largest price hikes since Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005, devastating the nation's oil and gas industry, according to CNN.
