GEORGIA — As school districts across Georgia conclude their first few weeks, the state set a new record Friday for the highest seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases for children since the pandemic started.

According to data compiled and reported by the Georgia Department of Public Health, Friday’s seven-day average was about 950 children 17 and younger.

The previous record was about 868, set during the last surge on Jan. 14, when many school districts were struggling through a combination of in-person and online learning and no COVID-19 vaccines were available. This time, almost all Georgia districts are fully open to in-person instruction and vaccines are available at least to those 12 and older.
