New Police Precinct, Gritters Library Groundbreakings Rescheduled

Cobb County government officials pushed back the dates for the Gritters Library and Northeast Cobb police precinct groundbreakings.

EAST COBB, GA — The groundbreakings for two East Cobb area facilities initially set this week have been pushed back due to "unforeseen circumstances," Cobb County officials said.

Groundbreaking for the new Northeast Cobb police precinct, Precinct 6, was planned for Wednesday, but will now take place Monday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. The new precinct and groundbreaking will be at 2640 Gordy Parkway, adjacent to the Mountain View Aquatic Center.

And the groundbreaking for the newly-renovated Gritters Library will be Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m., located at 880 Shaw Road. To RSVP, email Dinah Bonesteel at dinah.bonesteel@cobbcounty.org.

Cobb County commissioners approved the two projects as part of the voter-approved 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) referendum.

The $6.8 million new Gritters Library project was finalized in August with a $1.9 million grant from the Georgia Public Library Service.

Library Director Helen Poyer previously said the new building will feature a larger multipurpose room for public and library use; reading and study rooms; indoor/outdoor book drops; dedicated children's area; computer training lab; moveable stacks; outdoor programming/reading space; ample parking; flexible space to accommodate programs/services; and one service desk.

The new $5 million Northeast Cobb police precinct was approved in November, and will initially house Cobb County Police Department's special operations unit at first and will not have a patrol zone. The precinct is planned to one day have its own unit of patrol officers.
