Here are the top three stories in East Cobb today:
- A student was shot in Cobb County after several groups of high school students from different Cobb schools met at a local park. Police say the shooting happened before 5 p.m. on Nickajack Park Road in nearby Mableton when someone fired a shot in the park, injuring one of the students; information on the individual's condition has not yet been released. Authorities currently believe the incident was isolated and the shooting was not random. Police are urging anyone with information to call the Cobb County Police Department. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- An Atlanta man has received a life sentence for raping a Cobb woman in 2020. Cam Melikoglu received a guilty verdict after a trial that involved testimonies from the victim, her sister, and friends. Evidence confirmed the attack occurred while the victim was passed out around 3 a.m. after a party. Melikoglu will now serve 25 years in jail and be on probation for the rest of his life following his sentence. (East Cobb News)
- [Update] The Cobb Police Department has captured and arrested mass shooting suspect Deion Patterson. According to police, the Flock license plate readers that are installed in the cameras of DOT cameras were able to pinpoint the vehicle's exact location, allowing officers to find Patterson and make an arrest at 8 p.m. Wednesday night. No one else was hurt during the arrest. Patterson is being charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault in connection with the midtown Atlanta shooting. (East Cobb News)

- The Cobb County Police Department held a candlelight vigil on Thursday night. This annual vigil is held to honor and recognize local officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their community. The department has lost six officers in the line of duty.
