The End of Days for Seniors

Here's what you need to know to start the day May 23.

1. You’ll want to memorize this forecast because you’ll see it a lot in the next few weeks; just don’t be one of those people who act surprised that it gets hot in Atlanta. It will be mostly sunny today with a high near 90 degrees and little wind, the National Weather Service says. Expect a partly cloudy night and a low around 65 overnight.

2. As you’re reading this, you probably realize the world didn’t end Saturday (here's evidence in a live blog of what could have been the final countdown), unless you bet the farm on Animal Kingdom to win the Preakness (we’re really hoping to see another Triple Crown winner someday). Sorry, kids: Final exams go on as planned this week, starting today, for underclassmen at the high schools.

3. Meanwhile, it’s for our East Cobb high school seniors. Some of that shouting will take place during the three days of practices starting today. More of it will take place today at 7 p.m. at , 774 Roswell St., Marietta, when holds its Senior Evening of Inspiration, a student-organized night of speakers and entertainment to celebrate the Class of 2011. Family and friends of seniors are invited. And if you have a graduate you want to honor, we invite you to post a free announcement and photos on East Cobb Patch. Click here, and choose “Graduation” for the category.

4. For those with younger schoolchildren, the final Reading Night of the year is at on Lower Roswell Road across from Sewell Park at 6 p.m. Children can hear a story, do a craft and get discounted meals.

5. While we’re on the school theme, today’s your chance to meet , the for the Cobb County school superintendent’s job. He’s spending the day visiting his would-be place of employment, and he’ll hold a public meet-and-greet session in media center in Smyrna at 3:45 p.m. You can ask him yourself why he wanted to leave Dallas, or whether he prefers a balanced or traditional calendar, or who his favorite baseball player is (he’s supposedly a big baseball guy), or even how to pronounce his last name (Board of Education members had some adventures with it Thursday night). Or put your questions in the comment box below, and we’ll do our best to ask him those questions for you.
