Here are the top three stories today in Gainesville:
- Four men in Georgia have been sentenced to between five to 14 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for their involvement in a conspiracy to distribute large amounts of methamphetamine. Law enforcement officers seized roughly 200 kilograms of meth from the defendants during the May to August 2021 period. The men, including Eduardo Penaloza-Pacheco, 38, of Gainesville, were indicted for selling kilogram amounts of methamphetamine during this time, with some supplying the drugs and others selling them. (WSB-TV)
- LifeSouth Community Blood Centers are highlighting the importance of blood donations for maternal health. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, up to 11% of maternal deaths in the United States are caused by postpartum hemorrhage, but between 54-93% of these deaths can be prevented with proper identification and treatment, including blood transfusions. Blood donors at the LifeSouth Gainesville Donor Center, and other locations, will receive a $25 e-gift card until May 21. (Monroe Local)
- In case you missed it: There were multiple drug overdoses at the same motel in Hall County on Sunday. According to Gainesville police, one individual, out of a total of five in one day, remains in critical condition. It is still unclear what substances the victims took or where they came from.
