📰 News we're reading

1. Project Turbo developers announce they are still pursuing data center (accesswdun.com) — Developers behind the proposed Project Turbo data center on O’Kelly Road say they’re still committed to the Hall County site and may seek annexation into Gainesville to secure sewer service tied to Lake Lanier. They emphasize the project fits county land-use plans, address water-usage concerns with local lake advocates, and urge county leaders to first decide whether they want data centers at all.

2. Department of Education releases list of schools identified for targeted improvement (accesswdun.com) — Fair Street International Academy in the Gainesville City School System has been placed on Georgia’s Targeted Support and Improvement list, alongside several Hall County schools, due to underperforming student subgroups. State officials stress the designation is meant to bring extra resources and coaching, not stigmatize schools, and say focused support has helped many campuses improve in recent years.

3. U.S. News & World Report recognizes twice as many Georgia hospitals for best maternity care, access (gpb.org) — Families in Gainesville can take pride that Northeast Georgia Medical Center has been named one of Georgia’s best hospitals for maternity care by U.S. News & World Report. The state more than doubled its recognized hospitals this year, reflecting better access and improved C‑section and newborn complication rates, though Georgia still struggles with high preterm birth rates overall.

4. Championship game previews for classes 6A and 5A (ajc.com) — Gainesville High’s football team is headed to the Class 5A state championship, facing Thomas County Central after a strong 14-2 season. The preview breaks down records, rankings, key players and projected scores, giving Red Elephant fans a sense of how their team stacks up on the big stage in Atlanta.

5. Georgia's risk for recession at a near coin toss, annual study shows (savannahnow.com) — Gainesville’s food and machinery producers are feeling the squeeze from national trade policies, as a new University of Georgia forecast warns the state is near a 50–50 risk of recession. The report says Georgia’s trade-dependent communities, including Gainesville, face slower job growth, stubbornly high housing costs, and continued pressure from tariffs and tight immigration rules affecting construction and manufacturing.
