Here are the top three stories in Gainesville today:

  1. Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, has agreed to a $141 million multi-state settlement after it was found to have deceived low-income taxpayers into paying for tax services that should have been free. The settlement covers nearly 150,000 Georgia residents who paid to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for tax years 2016 to 2018. The amount each consumer receives will depend on the number of tax years for which they qualify, with most expected to receive between $29 and $30. (WSB Atlanta)
  2. Northeast Georgia Health System is inviting local artists to submit their existing artwork for a chance to be featured on the 11 floors of the new patient tower at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Each artist can submit up to four digital images or photos, and the artwork must depict recognizable landscapes and topography of the local geography. Artists residing or working in several local counties will be given preference, and the deadline to submit is May 31. (Access WDUN)
  3. Four men were hospitalized with overdoses on undisclosed substances, with one in critical condition, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville on Sunday. Police officials stated that the four had been at Motel 6 on Athens Highway prior to the overdoses. Gainesville Police Lt. • The City of Gainesville and the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) are reminding the public of new technology supervising areas marked for loading/unloading and five-minute parking around the historic square in downtown Gainesville. GPD's recent installation of SafetySticks, a technology provided by Municipal Parking Services, will help ensure these spots are used in the most effective manner possible. See a list of all SafetyStick locations at the link. (Downtown Gainesville via Facebook)
  • To celebrate Historic Preservation Month, the City of Gainesville is pleased to announce the new and improved Historic Green Street Walking Tour. During the month of May, Explore Gainesville will highlight a different home along Green Street every day. The sixth stop is the Burns Moss Palmer House, located at 454 Green St. (Explore Gainesville via Facebook)
  • The City of Gainesville will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 29, resulting in the closure of the following facilities and services: all administrative offices, the Community Service Center, and garbage and recycling services.
