Gwinnett Police Department Seeking Professional Accreditation

The Gwinnett County Police Department is going to be evaluated by a visiting team of accessors to gain accreditation. Public comments will be sought as part of the process.

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA ®) is scheduled to arrive Saturday, Aug. 17, to examine the police department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services to see if it qualifies for professional accreditation. 

Seeking accreditation is a voluntary process. The Gwinnett County Police Department has to comply with approximately 481 standards in order to gain accredited status.

Members of the community and department personnel are invited to offer comments at a public session at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, as part of the on-site assessment in Conference Room C at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center (GJAC), 75 Langley Drive, in Lawrenceville.

Comments may also be provided by telephone between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19. The number to call 770-513-5220.

Public and telephone comments are limited to 5 minutes. Comments must address the department’s ability to comply with CALEA Standards.

The assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar but out-of-state agencies. After the team completes its review of the Gwinnett PD, the team reports to the full commission, which will then decides if the department will be granted accreditation.

Accreditation is granted for a three-year period during which the department would be required to submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with accreditation standards.
