Gwinnett Police Shooting Critically Injures Armed Man: Cops

A man armed with a knife who charged at a Gwinnett officer was shot and injured in a police shooting, authorities say.

ATLANTA, GA — A 19-year-old man was critically injured in a police shooting Thursday in the 6000 block of Lockridge Drive, Gwinnett County Police said.

Around 1:45 p.m., police said officers were requested to respond to the home with members of the State Mobile Crisis Team from Behavioral Health Link.

When they arrived, police said they met with the man outside the home, and it was determined he needed assessing.

However, police said the man went back into the home, and then, came around a corner with a knife.

Officers gave him multiple commands to stop, but police said the man refused commands and charged at one of the officers while raising the knife. The officer then shot and hit the man, police said.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel immediately rendered medical aid to the man, police said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said he was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

Once the GBI's investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
