Sequoyah Student Honored by State Superintendent
Only 50 students in the state and one in Cherokee County were asked to be on the advisory council.

Jacob Whitfield, a student at , was named to the 2011-2012 Student Advisory Council by State School Superintendent John Barge, according to a press release.Â
Whitfield will attend two meetings geared towards letting students tell the Superintendent and the Georgia Department of Education how state programs are playing out in the classrooms.Â
Whitfield will also serve as the superintendent's ambassador inside Sequoyah.Â
"The Student Advisory Council is an invaluable resource to the leadership of the Georgia Department of Education," Superintendent Barge said in the release. "This group will provide a unique perspective on how state policies are working in the classroom and allow me the opportunity to communicate directly with students in schools throughout Georgia."Â
Whitfield was chosen out of more than 700 students who applied. He was chosen based on essay answers, school and community involvement.Â
