Here are the top four stories today in and around Johns Creek:
- Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has recently been holding weekly sessions at six different Fulton Co. middle and high schools, emphasizing the importance of education and avoiding gang activity. The anti-gang, anti-crime initiative is led by Akeem Woodard, himself an ex-convict who has turned his life around. (WSB-TV)
- Despite successful strike authorization in the Teamsters Union's recent vote, insiders are saying a tentative agreement has been reached between Teamsters and nearby Sandy Springs-based Universal Parcel Service (UPS). Among other things, the new agreement demands funding to be added for air conditioning in UPS delivery vehicles. While the terms of the agreement are still subject to final approval, union members are optimistic, and moving forward with demands like significant pay raises across UPS' workforce, improvements in workers' health benefits and pensions, elimination of the existing two-tier pay system, and more. - Car accident survivors Shakira Massiah and her daughter, 11-year-old Arielle Urquhart, are raising funds to help Children's Healthcare of Atlanta continue its work. Massiah and her daughter were in a head-on collision in January 2020 that sent both of them to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Massiah's daughter, Arielle, suffered a fractured leg, a concussion, and a major spinal cord fracture so severe that it is sometimes called an internal decapitation. Her miraculous recovery, made possible by her own determination and care provided by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, has inspired Arielle and her mother to try to give back. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- Tonight (Jun. 23), the Atlanta Field Hockey Club is hosting a free mini-sticks field hockey clinic at 5:00 p.m., offering an opportunity for both boys and girls between the ages of four and nine to experience the sport. The clinic, taking place at Mount Pisgah Patriot Athletic Complex, welcomes new and experienced players and ensures that all participants will play within their respective age groups. While athletic clothes and sneakers are necessary, shin guards and mouthguards are optional, and sticks will be provided for everyone. Register here. (Patch)
