Free Johns Creek Symphony Concert On Oct. 6

Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra will perform its season finale Saturday, Oct. 6 at Newtown Park.

JOHNS CREEK, GA — The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra will perform on its season finale with a free concert scheduled for Saturday at Newtown Park. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater inside the park at 3150 Old Alabama Road. The gates will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will be performed rain or shine.

Saturday's concert will be conducted by Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra Founder and Music Director, J. Wayne Baughman. Repertoire for the performance will include American favorites, from Broadway to Sousa to Jazz.

Admission is free and no tickets are required to attend the Oct. 6 show. JCSO Music Director and Conductor J. Wayne Baughman studied choral and orchestral conducting, earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education from the University of Alabama, as well as advanced studies in conducting at the
University of Michigan.

Upon his arrival in Atlanta in 1974, Maestro Baughman immediately became involved with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Choruses and for 25 years he was a frequent vocal soloist, chorus member, and rehearsal conductor under the guidance of the late Robert Shaw.

Well known for his oratorio performances as bass soloist, he collaborated with Maestro Shaw on numerous performance projects, including the Mozart Requiem Mass, J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion, and Handel’s Messiah. In 1990, as bass soloist, Maestro Baughman shared the honor of a Grammy Award for the Telarc recording of Belshazzar’s Feast (Walton) and Chichester Psalms (Bernstein) with Robert Shaw and the ASO.

Maestro Baughman has held conducting positions at the State University of New York at Cortland and Brevard Music Center. He also served as music director at Peachtree Christian Church in Atlanta for nine years, where his performances of major choral-orchestral works received critical acclaim. Maestro Baughman is recently retired from liturgical music.

Johns Creek notes beer and wine will be available for purchase from Hurricane Grill & Wings, and Let's Taco Bout It, Grubbin Out and King of Pops food trucks will be on hand to provide bites to eat. In the case of rain, attendees are welcome to bring umbrellas. No pop-up tents, please. If we experience lightning or severe weather, we may delay the start of the concert or evacuate, if necessary.
