Kennesaw Parks Announces Summer Writing Competition

Students are invited to submit an original short story or essay, in 750 words of less, about parks, picnics and summertime fun.

The Kennesaw Parks & Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Cobb Schools Foundation, will conduct the first-ever Pig Tales Writing Competition for students in grades K-8, culminating in an announcement of winners at the Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival on Aug. 24.  

The competition’s presenting sponsor is SCANA Energy. 

Students are invited to submit an original short story or essay, in 750 words of less, about parks, picnics and summertime fun.

The contest is open to all students in grades K-8 attending any public, private, or home school in Cobb County.  

First, second and third place winners will be chosen among students rising into three grade categories:  K-2, 3-5, and 6-8.

Entries may be written for the purpose of this competition or as part of a school assignment.  Works can be fiction or non-fiction and each student is limited to one entry.  

Awards include movie, Georgia Aquarium, and Atlanta Hawks tickets, BBQ meal tickets, Festival Kid Zone attraction passes, and t-shirts and goodie bags; the grand prize is a bicycle. 

Submissions may be typed or handwritten and must be submitted by mail postmarked by Aug. 9 to Cobb Schools Foundation, Attention: Sheri Brante, 514 Glover St., Marietta, GA 30060.  

Judging on creativity, presentation and correspondence to the theme will be done by a committee of professional educators, sponsors, and city staff.  

Winners will be announced no later than August 22 and awards will be presented at the annual City of Kennesaw Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival on Saturday, August 24, or if not in attendance, will be notified by mail.
