No Laws Broken In Kennesaw State Data Breach: FBI

BREAKING: FBI says no illegal activities found in data breach at KSU Center for Election Systems​.

KENNESAW, GA -- Kennesaw State said that findings from a federal investigation into a data breach at the Center for Election Systems indicated no illegal activity, the university announced Friday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation briefed KSU officials Thursday, telling them that no federal laws were violated in the unauthorized access of a dedicated server.

The issue surfaced on March 1 when university officials were first notified that a server was compromised, as Patch previously reported.

“We are working with experts within the University System of Georgia and a nationally-renowned outside firm to validate that KSU’s systems are secured and meet best practice standards,” KSU President Sam Olens said in a statement. “We greatly appreciate the speed and dedication of the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in helping us resolve this issue.”“

The FBI told KSU officials that the server was accessed by an external security researcher and that no student data was involved.
