Veterans Day 2015 in Kennesaw

Veterans and currently serving servicemembers will be treated to a free meal at the Ben Robertson Community Center on Wednesday.

Veterans and active duty personnel in the Kennesaw area are invited to the Ben Robertston Community Center to enjoy a complimentary lunch on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The free lunch event is being co-sponsored by North Cobb American Legion Post 304 and the City of Kennesaw, the city’s website says. All veterans and current members of the armed forces are invited to attend this lunch, and no ID’s will be needed for admission.

Members of the public looking to honor our nation’s servicemembers have two other local events they can attend to do so.

In nearby Marietta, a Veterans Day parade will embark from the Roswell Street Baptist Church parking lot at 11 a.m. Wednesday and will march along Roswell Street towards Marietta Square. 30 different organizations are expected to participate in the parade, including drill teams, marching bands, veterans organizations, and owners of military vehicles.

Following the parade, a commemoration event will be held in Marietta Square which will feature a keynote address from Maj. Gen. Stayce Harris, who commands the 22nd Air Force based out of Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta. The theme of Harris’ address will be “Never Forget.”

In Acworth, a commemoration will take place at 2 p.m. at Patriots Point at Cauble Park on the shores of Lake Acworth. Cobb County Commissioner and former Acworth Alderman Bob Weatherford will be the keynote speaker at Wednesday’s event.

Veterans Day was originally named Armistice Day and commemorated the armistice which ended World War I at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. It was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor the sacrifices made by veterans in conflicts such as World War II and the Korean War.
