For the smallest patients at Gwinnett Medical Center’s (GMC) Women’s Pavilion, moving from one facility to another can be very dramatic. To make the transition smoother for babies who are either born prematurely or are very sick, families can now take advantage of an additional transport incubator equipped with a high-frequency ventilator.
GMC is only one of two hospitals located in the southeast region to provide this type of equipment that features a high-frequency ventilator. The two transport incubators are available 24/7 to the GMC Neonatal Transport Team.
“By having a second transport incubator, we will be able to serve a broader patient audience,” said Cathie Brazell, director of Women’s and Children’s Services at GMC. “In 2011, we transferred 111 sick babies to and from the Women’s Pavilion. This new equipment will allow us to serve an even greater number.”

This new transporter is another tool made available to GMC’s full, in-house transport team, which provides care around the clock. The team, comprised of respiratory therapists and resuscitation nurses, is available to any baby needing transport to and from GMC.
“Because the team is fully accessible, the patient does not experience delays,” reiterated TK.

The recent equipment acquisition was made possible through a gift to the GMC Foundation from Greg and Tammy Shumate. Such gifts allow GMC to get equipment and other tools necessary to saving lives and healing patients sooner. “Without this generous gift from the Shumates, GMC would not be able to purchase an additional NICU Transport Incubator in the near future,” said Jason Chandler, president of the GMC Foundation. “Philanthropy is a way that community members can play a role in saving and enhancing the quality of these precious lives.”
Since the Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion opened in 1991, associates have helped deliver over 100,000 babies. Through leading technology, GMC is able to meet the healthcare needs of women and children and provide support to highly experienced physicians.
