Gwinnett AKAs Answered the Call to Serve on MLK Day
Members of the Sorority Volunteer at Multiple Venues
Martin Luther King Jr. Day was a national impact day for the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Serving others in Gwinnett County is Upsilon Alpha Omega's mission. The women of Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter made an impact by collaboratively exceeding over 300 hours in community service on this day.
Over 200 members of Upsilon Alpha Omega traded their pearls and pumps for paraphernalia, jeans and comfortable shoes in 9 community service initiatives in Gwinnett County. Instead of taking a day off, chapter members cleaned along a roadside, stocked food pantry shelves, planted flowers in gardens and more at the following locations: Adopt a Road at Five Forks Trickum, Salem Missionary Baptist Church Senior Center, North Metro Academy of Performing Arts, Gwinnett Children's Shelter, George Pierce Park and served at nonprofit Co-Ops at Lilburn and North Gwinnett. There were over 100 Upsilon Alpha Omega members in the United Ebony Society MLK Day Parade.
A special shout out to BB Watkins State Farm Agency for using their office as a collection spot, owned by Bianca Watkins, a member of Upsilon Alpha Omega. Items collected were 215 winter outwear, 892 can goods, 367 baby items (wipes, diapers and other items), 280 pounds of paper shredding, etc. Upsilon Alpha Omega also partnered with Gwinnett Cares and provided 50 FREE COVID kits.
