Gwinnett Inmate Found Dead During Security Check
A security check on the Gwinnett County Jail's maximum-security floor was being conducted when authorities say they found an inmate dead.
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A Gwinnett County Jail inmate is dead after recently being found unresponsive in his cell, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
Authorities said Phillip Antwon Munroe was found dead around 2:30 a.m., Jan. 27, during a routine security check in the jail's maximum-security housing unit.
Deputies attempted life-saving measures; however, emergency medical workers pronounced Munroe dead at the scene, authorities said.

Munroe had been incarcerated since July 6, 2022, and was charged on suspicion of aggravated assault, robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle and battery, authorities said.
The sheriff's office did not say how Munroe died but added the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is overseeing the probe in the case.

"To maintain the integrity of the investigation, further details will be disclosed once the case is closed. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to the loved ones of Phillip Antwon Munroe during this difficult time.
