Man Shoots Self During Police Standoff In Lawrenceville

A man told counselors "that he was suicidal and indicated that he wanted to shoot himself," prompting Gwinnett County Police response.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA —A man shot himself following an hourslong standoff with officers on Wednesday, Gwinnett County Police said.

The man, who was not identified, told counselors "that he was suicidal and indicated that he wanted to shoot himself," police said.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Gwinnett Drive, where they encountered the man and offered to take him to a hospital, police said.

While being escorted to a patrol car, police said the man pulled out a handgun and put it to his head.

Several hours then passed during a standoff between the man and the officers as they requested he drop the gun, police said.

Officers attempted less-lethal force, but police said the man fired the gun at himself. He was taken to a local hospital, police said. The man's status was not immediately known.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is overseeing the probe in the case.
