GCPS Earn Top State Accolades

Gwinnett County Public Schools recencly earned top accolades from Georgia education leaders for one of its programs to help increase literacy.
The Georgia Council for the Social Studies (GCSS) selected GCPS as the recipient of the GCSS Program of Excellence Award recognizing the district for an innovative program to support student achievement.

According to a press release from GCPS, the program recognized was GCPSs “Building Literacy in Social Studies” program. It was developed by the school district using the “train the trainer” model which allows representatives from local schools to receive social studies literacy training and then deliver literacy strategies to all social studies teachers at their school. The program uses research-based strategies on the reading process, vocabulary development, textbook literacy, civic engagement, use of primary and secondary documents, and newspaper and magazine literacy.

“This is another example of the outstanding work of the leaders and teachers in Gwinnett County," Dr. Eddie Bennett, executive director of GCSS, said in the release. "This program provided a wealth of resources to teachers in all grade levels to assist students in developing literacy skills.”

The organization presented the award to Gwinnett during the annual GCSS Conference at the Classic Center in Athens.
