Governor Presents Georgia Day Proclamation to DAR

Submitted by Debbie Houston, media chair of the Lawrenceville Philadelphia Winn Chapter of Daughters of the Revolution.

Members of the Daughters of the Revolution were on hand Jan. 17, 2012, to receive the Georgia Day Proclamation from Gov. Nathan Deal.

General James Oglethorpe (1696-1785), a visionary member of the English Parliament, had a dream for imprisoned British debtors. He wanted to give them a fresh start in the New World. After receiving a Royal Charter for a new colony in honor of King George II, Oglethorpe’s dream came true. On February 12, 1733, he led 116 people from England on the Anne to a site near present day Savannah.
