Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services Receives Grant for Critical Safety Equipment

The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services received a $5,000 grant to fund cooling rehabilitation equipment for their firefighters. The Leavitt Group partnered with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company to make the $5,000 grant available to the Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services Department. Specifically, the grant money has been used to purchase a portable shelter, cooling chairs, portable toilets, a misting fan, and core cooling towels.

Firefighters go through great stress while working in and around fires. They are faced with extreme temperatures and are weighed down by heavy turnout gear and breathing apparatus. Rehabilitation stations minimize the risk of injury and death to firefighters during training exercises and on real incidents, by providing them with a place on the fire ground where they can rehydrate and recharge.

“We are thankful for this generous grant,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dan Hansen. “Our men and women work hard every day to protect the community, and they deserve to be fully equipped to have their own safety protected.”

The grant was approved by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on July 19, 2011 and the equipment was purchased in late 2011.

Today, the equipment is place strategically around the county on units that will quickly respond to the firefighters needs. “It is really good to see local businesses wanting to help, seeing a need for their local firefighters and then taking the steps to make this happen. This equipment will indeed assist us to help provide for the safety of our firefighters when they need it most,” said Lieutenant Eric Eberly.

The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services would like to extend their appreciation to both, The Leavitt Group and the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Companies for this grant. With this grant the department can continue to provide the citizens, as well as the department’s employees, with the continued exceptional service that has become expected.
