Gwinnett County Deputy Sheriff Steven Cooley was recognized as “The Daily Point of Light” award recipient on March 18, 2013. Deputy Cooley is an ordained minister and a veteran of the United States Army. He is being honored for his work in establishing the STRAP program in Duluth Georgia. STRAP is a life skills and mentoring program for young men who have been in trouble with the court or considered at risk youth. STRAP is a volunteer program and a wonderful example of a community working together to save our most precious commodity.
As an honoree, Deputy Cooley will receive a certificate signed by former President George Herbert Walker Bush. The presentation of “The Daily Point of Light” award will be, April 5, 2013 at 1:00pm at the Gwinnett County Court Annex Building, court room 2-A, 115 Stone Mountain St., Lawrenceville Ga. 30046. Sheriff Conway and Judge Waller “will have words” at the ceremony.
“The Daily Point of Light” award honors individuals and groups creating meaningful change in communities across America. Each weekday, one volunteer or volunteers’ effort(s) is recognized with “The Daily Point of Light award”. “I’m extremely proud of Deputy Cooley and his work in our community, he has represented this agency his family and himself in an exemplary manner”, Sheriff Conway stated.
The daily point of light award was established by former Pres. George H. W. Bush to engage individuals, families, businesses and groups to solve community problems through voluntary service. During his presidency, President Bush distributed 1020 daily points of light towards, placing volunteer service at the top of his agenda. President Bush continues to sign all of the awards today.
