
Weather permitting, the section of is scheduled to be split on Thursday. Georgia Department of Transportation officials advised that there will still only be one lane in each direction, but it will be split around each side of the median. Three new traffic lights are also scheduled to become operational. Officials said in a press release that these changes should be in place by the Thursday evening traffic commute.
Paving will continue along the project though, necessitating intermittent lane closures and traffic shifts. Officials said since asphalt paving is temperature sensitive it could be spring before paving is complete. The project, which widens SR 20 to a four-lane divided highway from Cooper/Ozora Roads to Brand Road, was scheduled to be completed by Dec. 31, 2011, but has experienced several delays. As of Dec. 31, the project was 77 percent complete.
At a cost of $10 million, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in Gwinnett County, the project widens this 2.7 mile-long stretch of SR 20 between Grayson and Loganville. For information on the Georgia DOT, visit (www.dot.ga.gov).
