State Ending Online Driver’s License Renewals

A new program designed to increase security will eliminate a convenient online service currently available to Georgia drivers.

On May 8, Gov. Nathan Deal and the Georgia Department of Driver Services announced the launch of Secure ID, a program to place Georgia in compliance with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005.

“This program will give Georgians the most secure IDs we’ve ever issued in this state,” said Deal in a released statement. “It is our duty to protect our residents’ identities to the best of our ability.”

In 2010, Georgia began issuing higher security driver’s licenses and identification cards. The new Secure ID program further enhances “the integrity and security of Georgia DL/IDs” according to a press releases issued by Gov. Deal’s office.

“Georgians deserve to have the highest degree of safety measures in place to protect their identity,” said DDS Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “And DDS is committed to that goal.”

The new regulations go into effect this summer. As of July 1, anyone needing to renew, reinstate or apply for a Georgia driver’s license or identification card will need to present original identification documents to prove his or her identity, Social Security number and residential address.

Existing licenses and identification cards will remain valid until their expiration date.
