Bond Ruling In Killing Of Pregnant Gwinnett Teen Revealed
A bond decision was made for a man accused of killing his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend who was carrying the baby he fathered, prosecutors say.
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA β The 20-year-old man accused of strangling and killing his pregnant 16-year-old ex-girlfriend in Loganville has been granted a second bond much to the dismay of county prosecutors.
Gwinnett County Police arrested Jesus Monroy in July 2024 in connection with the fatal strangulation of Mia Campos. The teenager's body was found on July 15 in a wooded area near the 3600 block of Stephens Road, police said at the time.
Police at the time said Monroy was Campos' ex-boyfriend. She had left home the previous night with an unknown person, and when she did not return, police said the family used a cell phone app to locate her body.

The Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office on Friday said Campos was 7 months pregnant with a baby fathered by Monroy.
At the time of his arrest, Monroy was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, voluntary manslaughter of an unborn child (feticide) and making false statements or writings, prosecutors said. They added he was additionally charged with sexual assault.

Monroy was initially granted a $50,000 bond in August 2024 on the murder, feticide and aggravated assault charges, according to a new order from Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Tuwanda Williams released Friday. Patch has reviewed the order.
Williams said Monroy posted bond and was on pre-trial release but was re-arrested on Feb. 13 after the grand jury indictment.
At his newest bond hearing held Wednesday, prosecutors said they presented evidence that allegedly showed Monroy fleeing his home in September, when a search warrant was executed. They said they also presented new evidence that confirmed Monroy fathered Campos' unborn child.
Williams on Friday approved a $150,000 bond on the latest charges Monroy faces and ordered him to follow the original pre-trial release conditions. They include no contact with Campos' family or witnesses, staying on house arrest and wear a GPS ankle monitor.
βAs a result of defendant being granted bond again, even with additional charges, the district attorneyβs office will continue to fight to bring justice and accountability to the defendant because of the heinous offense of killing a pregnant teenaged mother and her child,β Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said in a news release.
βWe do not agree with the granting of bond in such cases as this, but we present the issues to the court, and the court, gives her ruling. We assure the family that the district attorneyβs office will fight and achieve justice in this case. The defendant has a legal right and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. We will prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.β
