You Could Live in Loganville or Grayson and Still be Somebody in Snellville

Some local residents with a Grayson or a Loganville address are also Snellville city residents.

Do you belong to two communities?

Some people in the Loganville and Grayson area do. Although mail is delivered from the Loganville or Grayson post offices, and the address reflects that, some residences actually falls inside the Snellville city limits.

This can create some confusion - especially when it comes to dealing with crime.

An arrest of two Grayson residents recently highlighted this anomaly. Although the couple live on Farmstead Court in Grayson, they were charged with threatening each other in a domestic dispute under a Snellville City Ordinance..

“It was in Hawthorn Glen, which is in the city of Snellville,” said Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead. “That’s the problem we always face. This one worked out in our favor, but it usually goes the other way with two zip codes being Snellville. That creates the perception we are inundated with crime, when a majority of those cases that are reported as Snellville are in the unincorporated area. I know that makes it difficult for many of the media, but it really does affect the perception of our city.”

According to Snellville police officials, there are some Grayson mailing addresses on one side of Highway 78 that are in the Snellville city limits and there are some Loganville addresses, off Rosebud Road, that also fall into the Snellville city limits.

“Remember when the U.S. Marshal’s tried to arrest the man at what was an Eckerd’s Drugs that is now a Dollar Store?” Whitehead said. “The media reported that the man was shot in Loganville and found in Grayson (the same subdivision as this incident), but both were in the city of Snellville.”

Whitehead said an example of where Snellville gets the rap for crime that is not actually in the city was a story a couple of years ago about a robbery spree at the Walmart on Highway 124 in Snellville.

“We obviously have a Walmart on 124 in the city, but they were referring to the one in Centerville,” Whitehead said. “The AJC reported two shot in Snellville home invasion a year or so ago and it occurred at the last house before you cross into DeKalb County near Lithonia.  Those zip codes run from Stone Mountain to near the end of our city at Loganville and from nearly Lawrenceville to Lithonia.  Anything that happens with a Snellville mailing address is reported as ‘in Snellville.’”

It's never been a secret that the tri-city area of Snellville, Loganville and Grayson are interconnected. Many just didn't know that some of those connections actually overlap.
