Gwinnett County Public Schools Will Charge Students For Meals Next Year: Reports

Gwinnett County Public Schools will resume charging students for meals next school year. Federal waivers allowed them to eat for free.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA β€” Gwinnett County Public Schools will return to charging for meals next school year, according to reports.

WXIA-TV reported that at a school budget meeting the decision was made that students will return to being charged based on their eligibility. The waiver ends on June 30, returning all schools to the same pre-pandemic lunch and breakfast prices.

Lunch is $2.25 at elementary schools and $2.50 for middle and high schools. Breakfast is $1.50 for all levels.

Gwinnett County Public Schools' free meals program has allowed students to eat for free for two years because of multiple federal waivers, reported the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

Now a waiver that requires school meal programs to be self-sustaining will expire at the end of the school year, reported the AJC. The waiver expiring will not affect qualifications for free or reduced meals, according to the news site.
