Gas Leak Repaired, Roadways Reopened In Grayson

UPDATE: Atlanta Gas and Light has secured the gas leak and the roadways have been reopened, according to authorities. Fire personnel have returned to service.

GRAYSON, GA -- Firefighters responded at 2:27 p.m. to a report of a gas leak at the intersection of Cooper Road SW and Athens Highway SW in Grayson. The caller to 911 reported a gas line was hit while drilling.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find a contractor that had been drilling in the area and struck two gas lines. A 6-inch steel main was struck as well as a 2-inch plastic line. Firefighters immediately began shutting down roadways and contacted Atlanta Gas and Light for assistance. The Hazmat team quickly arrived and began monitoring gas readings in the area and established a small hot zone.

Per the Incident Commander, two businesses needed to be evacuated, one being a gas station/food mart and the other being a car stereo installation shop. There are no other businesses being affected or homes. The wind in the area is assisting in dissipating the gas. Atlanta Gas and Light has two crews working to secure the leaks.

The roadways that have been closed are: Highway 78 westbound at Rosebud Road, Cooper Road north of Highway 78. Gwinnett County Police are controlling traffic. Highway 78 eastbound is open to traffic.

This is a long-duration incident, authorities reported.
