Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner Dies Following Breast Cancer Battle

Tiffany P. Porter, 43, died Thursday, county officials confirmed. She was the first Black tax commissioner in Gwinnett County's history.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Gwinnett Tax Commissioner Tiffany P. Porter died Thursday following a battle with breast cancer, county officials confirmed.

"Please keep Tiffany’s family, friends, and coworkers in your thoughts and prayers," Gwinnett County Superior Court posted to Facebook.

Porter was elected in November 2020 and became the first Black tax commissioner in Gwinnett County’s history when she was sworn in in January 2021. Prior to that, she was the first Black judge in the Duluth Municipal Court.

“Ms. Porter overcame many obstacles to achieve the ambitious goals she set for herself,” Chief Deputy Denise Mitchell said in a statement. “I will always remember her as a strong, resilient, brilliant spirit, and all the joy she brought to us. We will miss her.”

"On behalf of all of us at Gwinnett County Government, I send sincere condolences to the Tiffany’s family, friends and coworkers. We are all saddened by this loss," Chairwoman Nicole Hendrickson said.

The AJC reported that Mitchell will carry out Porter's duties for the remainder of her term, which ends Dec. 31, 2024.

County officials said Porter is survived by her four children, Tori, Zoe, Nia, and Brandon, and a host of extended relatives, coworkers and friends.

According to the county, tax commissioner’s offices will be closed on the day of Porter’s service to pay respects. The date and service details will be announced when arrangements are made.
