First Time Author From Loganville Establishes Publishing Company

When an injury sidelined Brenda Fain, of Loganville, she didn't let it keep her down. She used the time to write a novel and has now established a publishing company.

In 1999, Brenda Fain, of Loganville, injured her back. It was severe enough to require lumbar surgery. She could have let it have a negative impact on her life, in fact it started out that way, but instead she chose to use it in a much more positive way.

“While recuperating at home, I got bored, depressed and angry at feeling helpless,” Fain said. “I use to run - and I was angry at God for taking away my career.”

Fain said before her surgery she had worked at a major department store, working her way up the corporate ladder to a managerial position. But while she was on medical leave, Fain was fired.

“This is where eerie plays a role,” she said. “The book came to me in a dream. Yes, God gave me this novel to write.”

Fain said she began writing the book in 2003, eventually finishing it in 2011. She named the book “2265 Pine Lane.”

“I went the traditional route and submitted the required 30 pages to a big publishing company and was rejected,” Fain said. “My husband suggested I start a company and publish "2265 Pine Lane" myself. I gave it some thought - and here I am today a published author who runs a company.”

Fain said that the company, McCain-Fain Books, is the first publishing company in Loganville.

“I am working on a second novel and will release it next year. I will expand my business to publish other authors, but for now I will concentrate on getting established and finding money to branch out of my home office to a space in Loganville,” Fain said, adding that people get excited when they hear about a publishing company in Loganville. “I don’t plan to be a self-publishing company to authors; I want to use my capital to publish the novels.”

Fain said she has had five back surgeries up until now, but has refused to let her health stop her from pursuing her dream.

“I love my job,” she said.

Fain said she graduated from Georgia State in 1994 with a degree in Film/Video and is also a practical nurse.

"I haven’t had any authors contact me yet, but I’m hopeful," she said. “In the future, give me two years, I will be a full service company with employees. I will publish books under my imprint McCain-Fain Books and give aspiring authors a chance to get their voices heard. I’d rather get the doors slammed in my face, in order to build a stronger company for my authors.”

Fain said people can purchase her novel on the McCain-Fain Books website.

“2265 Pine Lane” Storyline

The story follows the lives of Patric and Marion Sullivan. Patric is the girl. They live in Texas and find, a little before two years in the marriage, that he has cancer. He beats it the first time, but when the story opens he is battling it a second time. He thinks he will die and wants a legacy to leave with his wife, if he dies. He wants a child, but she is barren. "2265 Pine Lane" portrays a beautiful story between a man and a woman who fight to preserve a love riddled with obstacles. The novel takes the reader on a journey of love, hate, fear, trust, distrust, anticipation, joy, anger, and sorrow. She is a virgin when she marries, and a cotton farmer.

Fain said the idea to make her a farmer was fueled by her belief that one day African-Americans will see cotton growing as a job in America.

"I'm not trying to re-write history, slavery will forever be embedded in our minds; I just want people to look at cotton growing by an African-American woman as a "We've come a long way baby" moment," Fain said, noting that after all, we do have our first African American president.
