Loganville School Resource Officers Supply Heaters, Blankets to Families in Need

On the coldest day of the season Tuesday (Jan. 7), Loganville school resource officers were out and about town helping those in need in the community.

Through getting the word out on Patch, Facebook, CodeRED, Shepherd's Staff, the schools and more, the division in the Loganville Police Department were able to identify 50 families in need when the temperatures dipped as low as 6 degrees, according to Assistant Police Chief Dick Lowry.

And with these families, the SROs gave out 40 electric space heaters and more than a hundred blankets thanks to donations through the community and churches.

"We had to go back and buy some more because there was such a need," Lowry said. "We didn't realize how bad [it was and] how many people were out there who didn't have any heat of any kind in their homes."

One particular family, with children and pets included, spent the entire night in their car because it was the only source of warmth they had.

The SROs also ran across an elderly gentleman who, despite being covered in blankets on his couch, was so stiff and cold that he couldn't even get up to answer the door.

"He was in such a state that officers stayed there for a while and actually put the blankets on him because he couldn't get up and do it," Lowry said, explaining that they gave him a few heaters for his home.

One Patch user applauded the officers for their heroic efforts.

"I saw a couple of police officers with trucks loaded up with heaters and blankets on Tuesday bundled up and walking around Lee Byrd road," wrote Rebecca Cohen. "[T]hey looked frozen, but the people they were giving things to were all smiles...kudos to you guys."
