GEORGIA — A suspect is behind bars after police say he stole a mortuary van from a Conyers crematory — and left the body in it behind.

Kijon Griffin, 23, of Atlanta turned himself in to authorities Thursday morning at the Rockdale County Jail, according to a social-media post from the Conyers Police Department.

Griffin reportedly took the van Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

“Upon the suspect’s flight, the gurney did roll out of the open back hatch and into the parking lot where it came to rest,” according to Conyers police. “Personnel on site were able to secure the body.”

From there, Griffin led police on a wild ride on Interstate 20 into DeKalb County, authorities said. After the van hit multiple vehicles, a tire blew out, forcing Griffin to escape on foot between Panola and Wesley Chapel roads, police said.
