UPDATE: Fatality Identified In Lilburn SWAT Standoff

The GBI publicly identified a Lilburn man who died Saturday during a standoff with Gwinnett's SWAT team, according to authorities.

UPDATE: A 43-year-old Lilburn man has been identified as the fatality during a Saturday-morning SWAT standoff.

A statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the dead man as Steve Campos.

"At one point, Campos walked outside the front of the residence (in Lilburn) and discharged his firearm at officers. A SWAT officer fired, striking Campos," according to the GBI statement. "Officers rendered medical aid, but Campos was pronounced dead at the scene."

An autopsy will be performed by the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office. No officers were injured during the incident.

Once the case is completed, it will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — A man is dead after police returned fire during a standoff Saturday morning in Lilburn, according to authorities.

Police responding to a domestic incident at a house on Bent Willow Drive found an injured female victim in the backyard, said a spokesperson for the Gwinnett County Police Department. They also found an armed suspect who had barricaded himself inside the house.

After officers tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with the suspect, they called the Gwinnett County SWAT team. When SWAT negotiations broke down as well, the suspect came out of the house and shot at SWAT officers. One of the officers shot back and hit the suspect, according to police. The suspect died at the scene.

The suspect has not yet been publicly identified by authorities. The Gwinnett County Police Department has called the GBI to handle the investigation.
