Update: Father Charged with Murder in Death of 10-Week-Old

Gwinnett Police: The baby had a fractured skull when he was taken to the hospital on Sept. 2. He died four days later.

The Gwinnett father accused in the death of his 10-week-old son has had murder added to his list of charges.

Kelvin Odom, 50, of Lawrenceville has been held without bond in the Gwinnett County jail since his arrest on Sept. 3. He also is charged with two counts of first-degree cruelty to children, according to jail records.

Odom was arrested a day after the baby was admitted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with a fractured skull. Police said the child died four days later, on Sept. 6.

Police said officers first responded to the family’s apartment on Water Vistas Parkway in unincorporated Lawrenceville around 4:30 a.m. on Sept. 2, after a 911 call regarding the 10-week-old having difficulty breathing.

When first responders arrived, the child had “resumed breathing, was crying and appeared normal,” police said last week. After paramedics checked the child, they offered to take him to the hospital, but Odom declined and the baby was left with him, Gwinnett Police Cpl. Deon Washington said.

“At approximately 7:41 a.m., the child’s mother returned home from work and noticed that the child had a medical problem,” Washington said. “The child displayed breathing problems and altered color.”

Odom and the mother began driving the baby to the hospital, but stopped along the way to call 911. Paramedics answered and took the child to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where the injuries were discovered.
