Young Hero Racing for a Kure for His 10-year-old Cousin from Loganville

Trevin "DatRacerzKidd" Aswarnauth is just 15 years old, but he already has taken on the responsibility of doing more than just having a whole lot of fun while he's on the racetrack.

Kaitlyn Singh, 10, of Loganville, has a hero. That hero for her is her mother’s 15-year-old cousin, Trevin Aswarnauth, or as he likes to be called Trevin “DatRacerzKidd”Aswarnauth.

“Trevin raced every Tuesday at Charlotte Motor Speedway – for the Summer Shoot out Series - and every Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway - Thursday Thunder. He will be racing in the Winter Series in November right here at Atlanta Motor Speedway,” said Michelle Singh, Kaitlyn’s mother.

But it’s not just Trevin’s skill on the racetrack that makes him Kaitlyn’s hero. It’s what he is using that skill for that makes him so special.

“Kaitlyn was diagnosed October 2011 with Neurofibromatosis,” Singh said. “So Trevin decided to help raise awareness for her cause and has put her picture and her donation site www.kaitlynskure.com on the hood of his car along with information for the Children’s Tumor Foundation Organization. Kaitlyn loves to watch Trevin race and she says that he inspires her - he makes her believe that all things are possible.”

Singh said her young cousin is a great role model for her daughter.

“He is kind, caring and an overall generous young man,” she said.

For Trevin, living up to Kaitlyn’s expectations – and helping her any way he can – is something he is focused on.

“My cousin Kaitlyn is depending on me just knowing that I’m an inspiration to her makes me feel determined and gives me the extra motivation to spread awareness on and off the track,” Trevin said. “I am proud - it makes me proud to say, 'I Race For A Kure,' and to know my cousin Kaitlyn is fighting NF. I want to fight with her too.”

Trevin said as Kaitlyn's older cousin, he feels that he does have a responsibility to Kaitlyn as well as to his younger brother and other younger cousins he has.

“I’ve been fortunate to have good parents who have given me the ability to help to spread awareness and I’m doing it. It kind of feels in a way that I’ve got extra weight on my shoulders, I represent Kaitlyn and her cause,” Trevin said. “It makes me feel really proud.”

Trevin said he and Kaitlyn have always been close, so when he found out about her condition, he felt helpless.

“I felt helpless because with Neurofibromatosis there is no cure and no treatment. I thought there was nothing I can do, until my cousin Michelle created KaitlynsKure. That’s what made me feel like I could make a difference and help in the best way I knew how - to race cars, hence Racing4AKure,” Trevin said.
”With every race I gain more experience. Every racecar driver's dream is to win races and become a champion. I believe while moving up ranks if I will become a champion one day, I’ll become more recognized, which will help me to raise awareness and to help Kaitlyn and all others who suffer from Neurofibromatosis. Because no matter what KaitlynsKure will always be my No. 1.”

For Kaitlyn, it makes her “happy and grateful” that Trevin wanted to help raise awareness about her condition.

“It was good because we could raise money for NF research and on his autograph cards was information about Neurofibromatosis and the Children’s Tumor Foundation. It makes me feel good that he loves me enough to help me,” Kaitlyn said, adding that it in fact makes her feel so good that “it’s indescribable.”

“Every time I see him race, I hope he wins or gets really close to winning. I always feel bad when he doesn’t come in first place because he gets sad.  Sometimes I go talk to him so he can feel better when he’s sad because we have a good cousin-to-cousin relationship. I have lots of fun going to the racetrack - we’re down in the pit area and we cheer him on - Go Trevin, Go Trevin!”

The bad part for Kaitlyn?

“The only bad part is that at the track it’s really hot and you feel like you’re melting,” she said.

Trevin, who actually attends school in Conyers, said when he finishes school he hopes to focus on a professional career in racing. He is currently a sophomore.

“I’m working up my way first though the lower division of the sport and then hopefully all the way to the top of NASCAR,” he said.
