Google to Screen Short Films at Ponce City Market on Friday

Event will include Q&A and special screening of some Oscar-nominated short movies.

ATLANTA, GA -- Movie enthusiasts will gather at Ponce City Market on Friday for a special screening of some Oscar-nominated short films.

The free event is being put on by ShortsHD, billed as the nation's only short film channel, and Google Fiber Spaces. The selected films are in the live action, animation and documentary categories and will be live-streamed from the Google Fiber Space location in Austin, Texas and piped into Atlanta and Salt Lake City.

The screening will feature a filmmakers Q&A led by Carter Pilcher, founder and CEO of ShortsHD.

“We are thrilled to showcase some of the best short films the industry has ever seen with this special live event at the Fiber Spaces in Austin, Atlanta and Salt Lake City. This year’s Oscar® Nominated Short Films showcase just how incredibly important short films are to the broader film industry and the many diverse stories and voices they represent,” Pilcher said in a statement.

Pilcher also said that Google Fiber will be offering the channel's On Demand package of Oscar-nominated short films.

Google is nominated for an Academy Award for the animated short film "Pearl, a Google Spotlight Story."

"Pearl," by Patrick Osborne, holds the distinction of being the Academy Awards' first virtual-reality nominee.
