Hurricane Irma: Atlanta Humane Society Taking In 100 Animals From Florida

ATLANTA, GA -- The Atlanta Humane Society took in about 100 animals Thursday from shelters in St. Cloud, Fla., as Hurricane Irma threatens the Sunshine State. AHS has been monitoring the monster storm, which is churning through the Caribbean on Thursday, wreaking havoc on the islands in its path.

AHS has been in constant communication with its counterparts in Florida and along the coast, the organization said. On Wednesday, the Atlanta Humane Society sent two transport vehicles to Osceola County Animal Services in Florida to pick up the animals from their shelter, AHS spokeswoman Christine Hill told Patch. The transport is expected to arrive back at AHS' Howell Mill campus Thursday around 4 p.m.

In recent days, the Atlanta Humane Society has been busy assisting in the effort to save displaced animals in Hurricane Harvey's wake. Days ago, the facility took in 30 dogs and cats from the Louisiana SPCA and placed them in Alpharetta at its Mansell campus.

On its Facebook page Thursday afternoon, the AHS said it had received about 100 animals. Also officials anticipate a "massive influx of felines coming into our care over the coming days due to Hurricane Irma so we're waiving the adoption fees of ALL cats and kittens through Sunday."
