Midtown Alliance to Receive Two Awards at PEDS 14th annual Golden Shoe Awards

Great News to share Midtown Patch!  This evening, Tuesday, October 29, metro Atlanta’s pedestrian advocacy organization (PEDS), presents its 14th annual Golden Shoe Awards at a celebration honoring people, projects and places that have contributed significantly this year to making metro Atlanta communities more walkable.

Midtown Alliance will receive two awards, and Georgia Tech will also be rewarded for their pedestrian research.  (Our sister website East Atlanta Patch will also be awarded for their ongoing coverage of pedestrian issues.)

The event takes place at the All Saints Episcopal Church’s Parish House at 634 West Peachtree Street NW from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. It is open to the public. Tickets at the door are $20.

2013 Golden Shoe Award winners:

Pedestrian-friendly Development: Emory Point, a mixed-use development that attracts foot traffic from nearby employment centers and is home to many people who work on Clifton Road.

Pedestrian-friendly crossing improvements: Midtown Alliance, for installing median refuge islands and Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons on 10th Street, which have cut speeding and increased safe pedestrian access to transit.

Pedestrian-friendly Research: Georgia Tech Center for Traffic Operations and Safety, for developing a tablet application that collects and evaluates data on sidewalk conditions and engaging volunteers to implement a comprehensive sidewalk inventory for the City of Atlanta.

Pedestrian-friendly Activism: Peggy Berg for organizing a large sidewalk repair project in Virginia-Highland and for researching and exposing the red tape that increases the cost and difficulty of sidewalk maintenance in the City of Atlanta.

Pedestrian-friendly Journalism: East Atlanta Patch, for bringing attention to controversial sidewalk maintenance policies and informing residents of opportunities for public engagement.

Pedestrian-friendly Street Transformation: Midtown Alliance, for reclaiming space for pedestrians and increasing safety at the intersection of Ponce de Leon and Peachtree Street.
