ATLANTA, GA -- With her pet pig stuck for days after falling into a manhole, a woman decided the best way to rescue the animal was to jump in after it.

The plan seemed brilliant until it became apparent it was not: The owner got stuck, too.

Atlanta Fire Rescue arrived at the the manhole at Westview Drive at Agnes Jones Plaza and rescued both Rick “Bacon” Ross and his owner, Latoria Middleton, just before 2 p.m. Friday, CBS Atlanta reports.

Ross ran out Wednesday while Middleton was taking a bath and tumbled down the hole on Wednesday, FOX 5 Atlanta reports.

On Friday morning, Middleton’s dog picked up Ross’ scent and led the owner to the 2-year-old pig.

The owner had to call 911 several times before getting put in contact with the water department, who told her that they were coming to save her bacon.

Despite those assurances, no rescue team had arrived by Friday morning and the owner decided to join Ross in the bottom of the manhole, according to FOX 5.

Local media posted video of the rescue Friday afternoon on social media, and CBS46 ran a livestream on its website as crews worked to get the pig out.

The time in the manhole didn’t appear to phase Ross too much. He appeared in good health soon after he was pulled out.

Pet pigs don’t always need rescued. Sometimes they’re the heroes, too. Last year, a pig named ‘Lucky’ alerted an Illinois family when their home caught fire in the middle of the night.
