Prepare for Midtown Traffic Nightmare Thursday

Two football games and a vice presidential visit will likely cause massive gridlock for Atlanta motorists.

College football games in Atlanta usually cause some traffic headaches. Pro football games in Atlanta can cause traffic migraines. Vice presidential visits to Atlanta can cause motorists to froth at the mouth in rage-inducing gridlock.

Unfortunately for us, all three traffic nightmares are combining on Thursday afternoon and evening to form a perfect storm of suck, according to Georgia Tech.

Not only will the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets be hosting their home opener at Bobby Dodd Stadium at 7:30 p.m., but the Atlanta Falcons will kick  off their final preseason game of the year at the Georgia Dome at 7 p.m. To put the icing on the cake of brake lights, Vice President Joe Biden will be giving a speech at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Buckhead at 7:30 p.m.

Despite speaking up in Buckhead, it’s expected that the vice president’s motorcade will take the Downtown Connector up to Northside Drive right around the same time as football fans will be heading to their respective stadiums.

Oh. Joy.

“The Institute will maintain normal hours of operation,” Georgia Tech announces on its website. “However, because traffic around campus is expected to reach peak volume quickly, managers and supervisors are asked to be as flexible as possible in allowing employees to depart campus early or telework where appropriate on Thursday afternoon.”

It might not be a bad idea to plan ahead for Thursday’s commute from hell by using public transit or arranging a day away from the office to telework, as the university suggests.
