Customer Accidentally Pumps About 10 Gallons of Gas onto Parking Lot in Monroe

Monroe public safety officials had to secure an area at Sims Gas Station in Monroe on Sunday night and clean up the spill.

Flashing lights at the corner of West Spring Street and Breedlove Drive in Monroe on Sunday evening were the result of a gas spill at Sims Gas Station, according to Lt. Bill Owens, public information officer for Monroe Fire Department.

"A patron was pumping gas and walked into the store. The pump's automatic shutoff did not work and approximately 10 gallons of gas was spilled onto the parking lot," Owens said. "Fire crews secured the area and used absorbent materials to soak up the fuel and prevented it from getting into the water drains."

Owens said the spill happened at about 8:26 p.m. and the area was secured for clean up between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. He cautioned that it is always necessary to remain with a vehicle while fuel is pumping.
