Medical Emergency Causes Wrong Way Wreck on Highway 78 in Monroe
Georgia State Patrol confirm that a woman experienced some form of seizures, causing her to cross the median and run into other vehicles on Highway 78 in Monroe on Friday evening.
Parts of Highway 78 in Monroe were blocked early Friday evening due to a traffic emergency. According to Trooper Flournoy with Georgia State Patrol, a wreck on Highway 78 close to New Hope Church Road and a second one close to the intersection of Lee Peters Road were connected.
"The woman driving had some sort of medical emergency, as a result of an aneurysm that she had previously that caused a seizure," Flournoy said, adding that the Toyota 4-runner that she was driving first hit a car close to New Hope Road before crossing back over the median. He said she had been heading westbound in the eastbound lane.
"She was not impaired by drugs or alcohol, it was as a result of the medical issue," Flournoy said.
Animal control were called as she had a dog in the car with her at the time, Flournoy said. However, her husband responded to the scene and was able to take possession of the dog. Flournoy said there were no injures as a result of any collision, but the woman was transported to the hospital due to her medical condition.
The Toyoto had come to a stop off the roadway just before the intersection of Highway 78 and Lee Peters Road, but Patch has not yet been able to confirm eyewitness accounts that Walton County Sheriff's Deputies had to perform an emergency stop on the vehicle to prevent any further damage.
"We don't have those details," Flournoy said, adding that WCSO, however, was first on the scene.
Flournoy said no charges have been filed at this time. Patch will update once confirmation of any other details are obtained from WCSO.
