Monroe Child Hurt In Wreck on Youth-Monroe Road Remains in the Hospital

A 9-year-old from Monroe injured in an early morning wreck on Youth Monroe Road on Oct. 31 remains at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

An early morning two vehicle wreck on Youth-Monroe Road on Oct. 31 sent three people to the hospital. One of the injured was 9-year-old Levi Cole of Monroe. The others injured were Levi's mother, Cindy, who was the driver of one vehicle and the driver of the other vehicle, Gaye Fishburn, 62, also of Monroe.

Levi was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta with a traumatic brain injury, an injury to his eye and other cuts and scrapes. His mother has now been released from the hospital and is able to join her son at CHOA. She said Friday, that her son has had surgery, but since there is still some swelling on the brain, he remains sedated to allow more time to heal.

"I am trying to be positive, but I feel very helpless," Cindy Cole said.

According to a spokesman with the Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened at about 7:20 a.m. Wednesday when Fishburn, driving a Ford Escape, attempted to make a left turn onto Youth-Monroe from Ho Hum Hollow, turning into the path of Cole's Honda Accord. Both drivers were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment and Levi was airlifted to CHOA Egleston for treatment. A 2-year-old riding in a child safety seat was not injured.
