senior quarterback Trey White has verbally committed to play football at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He will sign his national letter-of-intent with the Bulldogs on Feb. 1. White becomes the third player from St. Pius to verbally commit to a school this season.
"Trey White will go down in history as one of the best quarterbacks in St. Pius football history,” head coach Paul Standard said in a statement. "His leadership, guts, determination and competitiveness have been a key factor in the success we have had here over the past three years. In addition, and more importantly, Trey White is a first-class young man who will be an asset to The Citadel's football program."
White, a three-year starter for the Golden Lions, has his name etched in the record books of St. Pius football. He holds the second most rushing yardage in a game in school history with 245 yards in the Golden Lions' 38-13 victory over North Hall earlier this season. White owns the third-, fourth- and fifth-longest rushes from scrimmage since St. Pius began playing football in 1958. He is tied for fourth in rushing touchdowns in a game with three and tied for first with two passing TDs in a game. White has won 27 games as the starting signal caller for the Golden Lions.
During his career, White has rushed for 1,907 yards on 272 carries; an average of seven yards per carry and 21 TDs. He has completed about 60 percent of his passes, throwing for 1,518 yards on 93 completions in 154 attempts. White has thrown for 16 TDs in his time at St. Pius and is tied for first for most passing TDs in a season with nine in 2009.
The Citadel is a member of the Football Championship Subdivision and the Southern Conference, which includes Georgia Southern, Furman and three-time FCS national champion Appalachian State, among others. The Bulldogs are coached by Kevin Higgins in his sixth season, and the team is 4-4 this year.
