
The fall sports season at has started with success as all five sports that have seen action are ranked in their respective state polls. Volleyball and boys’ cross country are ranked No. 1 in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and ga.milesplit.com polls, respectively. Football remained at No. 5 in both the GACA and Atlanta Journal-Constitution polls this week, while softball sits at No. 8 in the GACA poll. Girls’ cross country is the third-ranked team in the state according to ga.milesplit.com.
The Golden Lion football team knocked off Westminster (AJC No. 6 in AA), 28-21 last Friday night. Logan Rosborough plunged into the end zone from one-yard out with less than a minute to give St. Pius the victory. Geno Smith led all rushers with 135 yards on 11 carries and scored twice while Nick Ruffin added another rushing TD. Rosborough ran for 76 yards on 19 attempts. Joe Crochet and Jacob Hambrick paced the defense with 8 tackles each. The Golden Lions are 1-0 and will travel this week to play Benedictine at 7:30pm on Sept. 2.
The St. Pius volleyball team took over the No. 1 spot in the GACA poll at the beginning of last week and promptly rattled off back-to-back area wins over North Atlanta and Stone Mountain. On Saturday, the Golden Lions won five consecutive matches over Lassiter, Northview, McIntosh, Johns Creek and Dunwoody. All matches were won two games to none at Northview High School’s play-date. St. Pius is 15-2 on the season with the only two losses to No. 1 Harrison (AAAAA) and No. 3 Whitewater (AAAA). The Golden Lions will travel to Oconee County to take on Oconee County and Athens Academy and then venture to Savannah for five matches on Saturday.

The Golden Lion girls’ cross country squad finished as the top AAA program at the Bob Blastow Invitational in Douglasville this weekend. Freshman Tessa Schwarze and junior Sarah Fristoe paced the lady harriers. The squad finished 12th among all classifications at the event. St. Pius will run this weekend at the Berry College Invitational in Rome.
The boys’ cross country team ran fourth overall and was the top AAA finisher at the Stage Races in Duluth on Saturday. Calvin Tirrell and Austin Sprague had the best times on the day. St. Pius will run this weekend at the Berry College Invitational in Rome.

The softball squad completed the week winning two of their last three games. It was a busy week for the Golden Lions as they dropped a decision to Buford on Tuesday and participated at a tournament at Cherokee and Allatoona High Schools over the weekend. After losing two games Friday, the team rebounded with wins over North Gwinnett and Woodland, Bartow before dropping the nightcap to Allatoona. The Golden Lions travel to Wesleyan today, before opening up the Region 5 slate with Druid Hills at home on Thursday.
Competition Cheerleading will not compete until Sept. 17 in a multiple team tournament at Mill Creek High School.
